It is no secret that the people of Cape Town are extremely active love to get involved in the many local sports events. But we know that you backpackers are the energetic types too and there is nothing better than taking a walk, jog or run around one of the most scenic cities in the world.

We know that you like to get involved as well as the locals so we’ve created an overview of the major running events scheduled for the remainder of 2016, keeping you in the loop so you are able to get yourself registered before your visit. And if you are not the running type the atmosphere at these races is also great so why not be a keen supporter and motivate the participating athletes with positive chants and smiles as they race on by…….

Fairview Goat Run (5km, 8km, 18km and 24km)


When: Saturday 15 October
Where: Paarl, Western Cape
About: The 8km, 15km and 28km routes traverse the slopes and upper areas of Paarl Mountain and promise some rewarding views. The 5km will cater for less serious runners and walkers alike. This year’s event will be for the benefit of the Paarl Hospice, Boland Autism, Sunfield Home, and Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. The 28km La Capra Extreme cater for the Fast and Serious runners, What’s more…… all athletes get to take home a goodie bag that includes some of Fairview’s cheese and wine. Yum!

OUTsurance KFM Gun Run (5km, 10km, 21.1km)


When: Sunday 16 October
Where: Seapoint, Cape Town
About: The OUTsurance KFM Gun Run is one of the biggest road running events in Cape Town. The event starts on Beach Road, Mouille Point and finishes on the fields at Hamilton’s Rugby Club. KFM (popular South African radio station) will also have a stage set up on the day with a mix of popular DJ’s and music to ensure an unforgettable race vibe!

Red Bull – Lion Heart (for the extreme ONLY)


When: Saturday 22 October
Where: Lions Head Mountain, Cape Town
About: This race is certainly not for the fainthearted with only the fittest of the fittest being able to compete –To qualify for the challenge, trail enthusiasts must complete a time trial route (it circles the base of the Lion’s Head) and the top 100men and 30 women on the leader boards (those with the best times) will compete in the competition. On race day, those who make the cut-off time of 31 minutes will advance to the main event – the top half will compete for the Elite title, while the bottom half will battle it out in the Intermediate category.

Halloween Forest Night Trail Run


When: Saturday 29 October
Where: Muratie Wine Estate (Stellenbosch)
About: This fun run is a spooky one especially for Halloween where the bravest run a route within the forest in the dark. Be fearless and enjoy the eerie night dressed in your most ghoulish costume. All runners must wear a light on their head… its dark out there. Everyone is encouraged to dress-up with a special prize for the best dressed Halloween costume.

St Luke’s Hospice Superhero Trail Run (6.8km, 15.7km)


When:  Sunday 20 November
Where: Cricket Oval, UCT
About: Dress up like a superhero and join the St Lukes’ Hospice run. This trail run’s ultimate aim is to raise money so that the hospice can keep caring for the terminally ill allowing them to continue the fantastic job that they already do. So put together your most bonkers and brilliant superhero outfit and join the fun!

The Cape Town Color Run (5km fun run)


When: Saturday 12 November
Where: Green Point, Cape Town
About: The 2016 run promises more fun, more colour, more laughter, smiles and rainbows than ever before! The start gun goes off at 3pm on the day which starts the most colourful 5km run around Cape Town. It takes 1-2 hours to run or walk the route into the festival zone where you will then be able to relax and enjoy music from local DJs, food and drink!

And then be sure to head to The Randy, our bar for the after party. This is what happened in the bar and watering hole (swimming pool for those in the know) last year……….
