This hidden gem is located on the hip and happening Bree Street which has recently become one of Cape Town’s trendiest hot spots, with First Thursday’s marked in everybody’s calendar. As popular as this street as become, Gate69 still remains unknown to many. Knowing only too well what it is like to be the new kid of the block we thought we would help to scream, shout and rave about this awesome gem. Why? Because this is an incredible mini Moulin Rouge experience that is unique to Cape Town and one that should not be missed during your time in the Mother-City!
So let us tell you MORE, MORE, MORE about this sassy yet classy cabaret show…
You enter the venue by walking down a red carpet which automatically makes you feel like a Hollywood star and then to top it off you are greeted at the door by the star of the show Miss Cathy Specific herself! Being greeted by this busty 7 foot, platinum blonde drag queen is an experience that you certainly won’t forget and for many is reason enough to return!
The show starts at 20h00 but it is recommended you arrive at 18h30 to allow enough time for you to enjoy pre-drinks and a sit down meal. Upon arrival you are given a cocktail or mocktail to enjoy in the downstairs bar area.
The venue itself is the very definition of chic, decorated elegantly in deep purples and golds and with Cathy’s recognisable face imprinted on chairs, pictures, wallpaper (pretty much plastered everywhere!) it captures you from the moment you enter.
You are then led by Cathy and her ladies to the lounge area where you will enjoy a cosy and intimate dinner before the show. And with the theatre only seating 80-90 guests, it allows for personalised service where you are made to feel like royalty!
You are then free to nibble away until your hearts content at your simple yet exquisite mezze platter.
The evening is based around being a dinner theatre and one of the highlights of the night is your beautifully displayed and mouth-wateringly delicious mezze-style meal.
Your mezze is likely to include a tasty combination of pates including fish and chicken liver, humus, relish, fruits, breadsticks and a selection of cheeses to name a few. Cathy’s crew of airhostesses (waitresses) then surprise you with home-made warm beads and a flavoursome soup of the evening. To settle your taste buds and to end the night you are given a refreshing soft serve ice cream.
Gate69 is ultimately a cabaret theatre venue, however, the show currently playing, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, is not a cabaret show. This highly acclaimed and multi-award winning show is more of a rock musical which is about a genderqueer East German singer named Hedwig. The show lasts for 90 minutes without an interval and it certainly does provide a fair few laughs but also touches upon gender identity as Hedwig honestly tells the audience her story through song. The voice of Hedwig’s co-star ….. will leave you mesmorised.
While we would more than recommend this incredible show, if you are after a night full of drag and belly laughs every other second, we recommend that you wait until December, when the show changes.
Cathy Specific will be premiering the show “Cathy and the Trolley Dollies” in December. Already sold out for Christmas and New Year, this show is set to be a popular one. So we recommend booking your tickets NOW to avoid utter disappointment.
