1. JACK D, JERRY’S
What is it: A 100-percent pure beef burger basted in a sticky Jack Daniels sauce with caramelised onions and crisp bacon. (The B.A.F – bacon, avo and feta – came in a close second.)
What we love: The patties are made according to a secret mince recipe, with no eggs or bread crumbs. And contrary to many other burger joints, the price includes a generous portion of fries: thin, shoe-stringy perfection.
X-factor: The mouthwatering patties are served on gorgeous brioche buns. Tangy sauces such as chipotle mayo and mustard mayo are made in-house from scratch.

2. COLOSSUS, WOODIES
What is it: A burger so big, it has its own hashtag! Four 100g beef patties (or two chicken fillets) with mozzarella, cheddar, lettuce, onions, tomato and gherkins. Hashtag: yum!
What we love: Burgers start at R25 and there are nine to choose from – all available in either a hand-pressed pure ground-beef patty or chicken fillet. Plus, everything on the menu is halaal.
X-factor: The Woodies experience is not what you might expect at the V&A. You’ll find it upstairs at the V&A Market on the Wharf. Grab a seat at one of the tables in the food court and wait for your name to be called to collect your order. If it’s a nice day, take your food and sit at one of the outdoor tables. Your traditional hand-cut chips (R10 extra) come in a styrofoam cup, the biggest burger you’ve ever seen on a paper plate and, finally, expect to use the heap of napkins provided – it’s hard to keep things together!

3. THE GOOD BURGER, LOADING BAY
What is it: 100% grass-fed pasture-reared beef, served with truffle-salted fries or fresh greens, and a Devil’s Peak ale or a Lindt-chocolate milkshake.\
What we love: The truffle-salted fries (and, are we allowed to say this, owner JP Bolus’s smile).
X-factor: The first-grade meat from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants.
When: Thursday, 6pm (early sitting), 8pm (late sitting)

4. BEEF BURGER, TASHAS, CONSTANTIA VILLAGE
What is it: Two handmade sliders, served with polenta chips or skinny fries, and a side of tzatziki.
Cost: R68 (plain), R75 (with cheese)
What we love: If you’re not very hungry, it’s the perfect dish to share. The shoestring fries served in a glass are crispy and delish.
X-factor :The tzatsiki, which you can ladle onto your patty or use as a dipping sauce for your fries, is heavenly.

5. CLASSIC DOUBLE BURGER, GIBSON’S
What is it: Two x 200g pure beef patties on a homemade sesame-seed bun, topped with lettuce, sundried tomato, caramelised onions, cucumber and their Number 6 Secret Sauce, served with potato or sweet potato fries (or half of each).
What we love: The taste sensation of all the flavours together, enhanced by Gibson’s secret basting and Number 6 sauces. The ribbons of cucumber add freshness and crunch.
X-factor: The finger-lickin’ sweet-potato fries.

6. CHEESEBURGER, MONDIALL
What is it: 180g patty of locally reared wagyu beef and free-range ostrich, with a serving of fries
What we love: Everything about the Mondiall experience is delicious!
X-factor: The dollop of umami ketchup on top of the patty and, of course, the quality of the wagyu meat.
When: Daily, 9am – 10pm

7. OLD SCHOOL 1950S MEGA SLIDER, DOG’S BOLLOCKS
What is it: A beef patty topped with melted cheddar, caramelised onion, fresh shredded lettuce, slices of tomato and secret sauces.
What we love: The make-shift vibe (it’s in a driveway-cum-garage); proprietor Nigel Wood’s dry humour and no-frills approach (no waitrons, no cutlery) and, of course, the limited-edition burgers – Nige makes 30 a night and once they’ve been snapped up, that’s it. Oh, and you can bring your own corkage-free drinks.
X-factor: The Ukuva Afrika sauces, concocted by Nigel himself, that accompany all the burgers.

8. CLASSIC ROYALE, ROYALE EATERY
What is it: 160g pure beef patty basted in Royale’s special sauce, topped with aioli, lettuce, tomato, caramelised onion and gherkins, and served with salad, potato or sweet-potato fries.
Cost: R66 (single), R78 (double)
What we love :The vibe. You have to order a shake to go with your burger – they range from tame (Choc Brownie) to devilish (Tequila and Coffee)
X-factor: Royale’s sauces are tang-tastic: have your burger with the house basting sauce or a go for the delicious homemade tomato relish.

9. BACON AND MELTING-CHEESE BURGER, THE SLUG & LETTUCE, DURBANVILLE
What is it: A 200g hand-pressed South African beef patty garnished with tomato, onion, greens, finished off with onion rings and served with fries.
What we love: The generous amount of melting cheese and bacon – you’ll leave satisfied.

10. CAPRICE BURGER, CAFÉ CAPRICE
What is it: 100% pure beef topped basted in barbeque sauce, topped with beer-battered onion rings and served with fries.
What we love: The setting – in the thick of the Camps Bay Strip. Although it attracts the glam squad, its beach-facing location make it quite chilled
X-factor: The onion rings – a mini meal in themselves – add texture, crunch and flavour.

11. CLASSIC AMERICAN BURGER, JAKES
What is it: A 200g handmade patty topped with mature cheddar, chipotle mayo, thick-cut gherkins and onion rings
What we love: The juiciness of the extra-thick patties.
X-factor: It’s unashamed go-big-or-go-home presentation (it’s American, after all); the spicy kick of the chipotle mayo.
