The Platbos Log Cabins within the Slanghoek Mountain Resort is our well deserved “Hidden Gem of the Week”. The log cabins are the definition of paradise and it would be selfish of us to keep such a gem to ourselves – so let us share with you and only you!
Being just an hours drive from Cape Town, we think this spot is the perfect stay for travellers wanting a completely different (equally lekker) vibe from the hustle and bustle within the city centre.
The three (that’s right just three!) rustic log cabins are isolated and removed from the rest of the Slanghoek Mountain Resort. To get to the cabins you need a 4×4 or a raised vehicle with good ground clearance and then it is a ten minute drive to heaven. Once you arrive at the site you will fail to miss the picture perfect cabins that sit before you. Beautifully positioned on stilts around a crystal clear dam and surrounded by a majestic backdrop of beautiful mountains, you won’t be disappointed upon arrival.
As the Platbos Log Cabins are part of the Slanghoek Mountain Resort, you are also able to take part in the activities they provide (some at extra cost). These include;
Horse riding – most Saturday mornings
Swimming in the resorts pools
Having access to these activities is great we recommend making use of them if you stay for more than one night here but the real charm has to be at the Platbos Log Cabin site itself. Seriously you won’t want to leave when you have spectacular views like this all around you…..
There are some scenic walks and hiking trails including a hike to the nearby waterfall. This hike starts at the cabins but please be aware that the flow is dependent on season and also be prepared to fight through shrubs as the path can be slightly overgrown. Simply just by walking around the dam and through the nearby wine fields you are able to take in the spectacular views – during Spring and Autumn the colours of the plants are striking!
When the weather is warm, the dam is perfect for a dip. And when the weather is hot you will be in the dam for hours and hours but don’t forget your sun-lotion as we want you to go home looking like a bronzed goddess not a burnt lobster!
The log cabins are rustic but well appointed with good quality linen on the beds and a well stocked kitchen with a gas stove and oven, a gas powered fridge and a braai for the patio. The cabins can accommodate up to six guests, with two spacious double bedrooms on the ground floor and two single beds in the spacious loft (with the best view).
The “rooibos” (a popular South African tea) toiletries neatly positioned at the end of each bed are a cute local touch.
Be aware this is an Eco-friendly spot, so no open fires and no braaing are allowed off site but with a HUGE decked balcony overlooking the gorgeous dam you won’t want to braai anywhere else. Electricity in the cabins is limited to a battery that runs LED strips lights in all the rooms. There are no power points so if you rely on something that needs charging to keep your life going then have some kind of a backup plan like a solar charger or car charger.
Whilst there is cell phone signal, we recommend switching off your phones entirely, rather be at one with nature and embrace it’s natural beauty without technology. You can always upload that Instagram photo (you will get many!) and boast to all your mates when you leave.
Here are some top tips to help prepare for your trip:
– Bring bug spray
– Plan your trip according to the time of year you travel for example if it’s summer you will need plenty on sun-lotion and your swimwear
– Pack lots of layers as the weather changes quickly even in the summer months
– Pack walking shoes
– Bring wood for the fireplace within the cabin
– Research the surrounding wine estates as there are plenty of good ones close by
Have an epic time!!!
