Located in the heart of South Africa’s famous Garden Route surrounded by the indigenous forests and high mountains this is a backpackers with a difference. Whether you choose to use the hostel a place to relax or as a base to explore local attractions you, one thing is certain, and that is that you are guaranteed to leave having found your inner hippy!
Wild Spirit Backpackers Lodge is situated on the picturesque Khoinania farm which helps to create a very unique backpacker experience. This might be the only place you stay during your time in South Africa that has a horse, cats, dogs and chickens (to name but a few!) as pets.
This unspoiled haven is one of the most magical places you will find in the heart of the Garden Route. Wild Spirit is surrounded by the indigenous forests of Tsitsikamma National Park making the location an ideal stay for those who like to explore and go on scenic walks. It is also a short distance to the exquisite lagoon of Natures Valley which is must see during your garden route adventure.
As well as plenty to see and do in the surrounding area there is also an extensive list of things to do at the Wild Spirit site itself including a sociable tree house deck and boma area for you social types where you can go to enjoy a meal together, simply relax or to have a sun-downer at the night owl bar as you take in the spectacular views of the valleys, mountains and forests ahead.
Most of the guest rooms and dorms at Wild Spirit Lodge Backpackers are located within three double-storey garden cottages, nestled under giant trees. They are cosy, comfortable and far enough away from the main gathering spot at the tree house deck/boma to ensure a good night’s beauty sleep!
You also have the option to camp within the forest garden campsite at a reasonable rate which is perfect for you backpackers on a tight budget who are driving the Garden Route with a tent. The camping area is also conveniently situated close to the communal bathrooms and farm kitchen facilities.
And if you don’t have your own tent with you but still want to sleep beneath the stars in the forest then we suggest you check out one of Wild Spirit’s pre-pitched safari tents!
The facilities at Wild Spirit include some of the following:
Communal Kitchen – Equipped with gas burners, herb garden, cupboard and fridge space and a recycling station.
Braai (BBQ) – Braai sites and firewood are available
Complimentary tea and coffee – are available all day
Free wifi – wifi and use of the computer in the log cabin lounge
Please be aware that if you plan to cook yourselves you must buy your food along the way as despite a small farm store selling a few organic (quite pricey) items there isn’t a lot nearby. However if you would rather not cook, fear not, as Wild Spirit offer a home cooked meal from 7pm (African time) daily.
There are many exhilarating and fun activities on site to keep you guys entertained during your visit including three short forest walks on the farm grounds (the Magic Forest Trail is a must!). As well as yoga, a meditation room, a library, board games, a tree house and a craft corner. Music nights, drumming circles and themed dress up parties also take place frequently. And if you’re a musician get in touch as they often all you to play for your stay!

As such, current and future projects on the farm are geared towards self-sustainable living in its entirety. These include “permaculture gardening, the development of a biogas digester and grey water catchment system, a bio-fuel ring main for water heating, solar energy, removal of alien vegetation and introduction of water-wise, indigenous and medicinal wild flowers” (http://www.wildspiritlodge.co.za/projects.html).
